As we mentioned in our last Ezine, a healing crisis is also known as the Herxheimer Reaction which occurs when the body is detoxifying too rapidly and toxins are being released faster than the body can eliminate them. A healing crisis can result from any holistic/natural therapy such as homeopathy, naturopathy, improved diet, or energy medicine. Many people may associate a “healing crisis” with cleansing or fasting. However, it can happen from raising your vibration through spiritual practices or energy therapies also.

The first time I recall experiencing a healing crisis was when I began meditating, and left my legal career to embark on my spiritual and healing journey. I felt feverish and headachey for months, and very thin-skinned emotionally. I needed extraordinary amounts of rest. Yet I knew I was not sick; I felt a strange sense that not only was I going to be okay, but that a new level of awareness and well-being would emerge, like the chrysalis from the cocoon.

You May Feel Worse before Feeling Better: “Peeling the Onion”

We often mistake healing crisis reactions and think we are getting sicker. Yet it often happens in the reverse. These symptoms can be brought on by a new diet or health regime, energy healing or spiritual work.

Dr. Stanley Bass, N.D. D.C. Ph.D. writes, “As you move toward better health with natural healing programs and better nutrition, healing begins to occur. As part of the healing process the body will begin to discard toxic residues which have built up in your body over the years. During the initial phase of healing, as your body begins to clean house, (detoxify) and your vital energy begins to repair and rebuild internal organs, you may experience headache, uneasiness, flu like symptoms and fatigue. These symptoms will pass as your body begins to normalize to a new level of health. You may feel worse before you feel better.”

“During the healing crisis, it is important to not suppress these temporary symptoms with drugs or the healing process may become interrupted,” notes Ginger Chalford, Ph D. “It has taken time to develop a chronically diseased state, and time is required to let go of the “locked” energy, piece by piece. It’s like peeling the layers off an onion.”

Surprisingly, often the crisis will come after one feels their very best and most energized, setting the stage for the elimination. The whole body gets into action. Most people feel an energy boost at the beginning until the toxins start dumping into the blood stream for elimination. I see this with animals too as they are placed on raw diets or sometimes after energy healing. It is as if the body is now strong enough to do its job to release whatever is compromising optimal health and well-being.

Hering’s Law of Cure – Healing Occurs from the Inside Out

According to Dr. Hering healing occurs from the inside out, meaning that toxins are excreted through the skin. This is especially true when the liver, kidneys and lungs have been impaired to some degree. It is also true for energy healing modalities like Reiki—they work on the causal level of dis-ease to bring about balance on all levels, emotional, spiritual and mental causes as well as physical.

My first physical example of this was in the early 1990s at a conference for a health supplement I was using with great results. The man next to me showed me his arms and torso–they had small red dots all over. He said that his whole body was covered with these red spots and gratefully, he stopped disrobing further as I emphatically pleaded “I believe you!!”

At first he thought it was a rash or allergic reaction. But he was not itching, and he did a bit of research. He then sent off some samples to a lab of skin scrapings and they found high levels of asbestos! He had been a construction worker for 20 years and had multiple exposures. Now he said his body was getting healthier, and able to excrete the toxic substance through the skin!

How to Minimize a Healing Crisis

If the Herxheimer reaction occurs, most health professionals suggest you cut back on your health detoxification program. However, the opposite is true for energy healing. It is often the time that people want to quit as it gets uncomfortable. This is the time to ask for help and receive as much healing as possible so that you can clear things with greater ease. The beauty of energy healing techniques are the speed and overall ease with which you can release accumulations of toxic thought patterns, emotions and physical symptoms.

Be kind to yourself — mentally, emotionally, and of course physically. Here are some tips for you to minimize discomfort:

• Drinks lots of pure alkaline ionized water (we love our Kangen water)
• Get minimal exercise daily
• Lots of sunshine (avoid midday in tropics)
• Get plenty of rest
• Take detoxification slowly … one step at a time
• Don’t increase the dose of herbals
• Keep the organs of elimination (bowels, lungs, skin, kidneys) open

How Mindset Affects Healing Reactions

Once many years ago I was on the phone doing distant healing with a new client and a strange thing happened. Five minutes into the session she began to vomit, and she had not been ill at all. At first I thought perhaps there was something I did that caused such a strong reaction, and began to wonder if I should find a way to regulate the Reiki I was sending.

However, I immediately realized I had never had to do this before and reminded myself of the true nature of Reiki or Universal Life Force. Reiki is supremely intelligent energy, and most certainly not directed by me, rather it is the recipient’s own innate wisdom that applies the energy where it needs to go. So I nixed that thought pronto as I really did not want to make the error of thinking for one second this energy was about me.

I went back to our original conversation where the client exclaimed that she wanted everything in her life to change yesterday; a new job, a new home, a new husband! She was adamant that these major shifts couldn’t happen fast enough. Voila! A clue… I reminded her how she had been really impatient in her request for major change, and that could be influencing her experience.

I suggested she ask for her changes to occur with “grace and ease and divine timing”, and immediately she stopped vomiting and felt better. While this kind of dramatic release happens very rarely, it was a perfect example of how our mindset affects our healing process. Since that experience I have incorporated potent energy management techniques and intentions that facilitate our conscious alignments with more ease and consistently speed healing results and alleviate the struggle often associated with achieving higher levels of consciousness, vibrant health, and radical transformations.

Many years ago I was in a meditation ashram relishing my favorite spiritual practice: chanting devotional Sanskrit hymns. The mantras, syllables and even the ragas, or melodies, were designed to purify the body, mind and spirit. My first spiritual teacher then asked everyone what they experienced and the answers were: “light, bliss, peace”, etc. Finally one brave soul raised her hand and said “I feel terribly agitated.” The guru was delighted and said “YES—that is VERY GOOD!”

Far from relishing in someone’s suffering, the teacher went on to explain that the very pure vibrations of the chant will work deeply on breaking up any denser energies, any less-than-happy thoughts and feelings and begin to clean out the closets, so to speak. A very good thing indeed, but it can be a very unpleasant, and misunderstood, process.

The same is true with energy healing. Most people will experience very pleasant sensations like warmth, tingling, peace, lightness, calm, happy, energy, hope and pain relief. Some will not notice anything, but may later find they feel very rested and refreshed. My mom was like this. She rarely felt anything in the moment of receiving Reiki but went into a deep sleep and always awoke feeling better.

Yet a handful of people may have what is called a “Healing Crisis”, experiencing very strong unpleasant feelings and sensations, like dizziness, nausea, extreme fatigue, intense pressure, strong emotions, headaches, even pain. It is not common but when it happens I feel just like my teacher: “Very good!!” Because I know that the energy is working on a causal level to bring up to the surface an old pattern, repressed emotion, old injury or illness process, and assist in releasing it. I also know that the person is going to feel VERY changed when something this intense happens.

For example, in my recent Global Distant Healing, one woman, new to energy healing, wrote that she felt sick with a very strong headache and that she had to be still or it worsened. She felt actually “knocked out” by the energy and in “some other place.” It was disturbing her, until the next day when she awoke:

“This is like a totally new place for me. I feel new, I feel changed. When old fear thoughts come in, it is so much easier to let them go. I feel aligned and more expansive. I really am amazed.”

I have never experienced someone remaining in this type of intense agitated place for very long. As a matter of fact, the more intense it is, the greater the shift afterwards. So it may seem strange, but I get very excited when a client experiences a Healing Crisis.

What is Healing Crisis (aka Herxheimer Reaction)
In the holistic health worldview, a healing crisis is seen as not only natural but necessary. In the article “Understanding Healing Crisis” Ginger Chalford, Ph.D writes: “The body has an inherent desire for perfect health… the body must go through an elimination process to achieve good health. The elimination process is often referred to as the “healing crisis…also known as the Herxheimer Reaction which occurs when the body is detoxifying too rapidly and toxins are being released faster than the body can eliminate them. A healing crisis can result from any holistic/natural therapy such as homeopathy, naturopathy, improved diet, etc.” I would of course insert here the Usui System of Natural Healing or Reiki.

“In a healing crisis”, Dr. Chalford continues, “every body system works together to eliminate waste products and set the stage for regeneration. Old tissues are replaced with new. A disease occurs when the body cannot make it through its natural healing crises for one reason or another. The body is “locked” into a destructive and shut down place, physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.”

While the symptoms of the healing crisis may at first be similar to the problem or disease it is meant to heal, there is an important distinction: elimination or release. A cleansing, purifying process is underway and stored wastes are in a free-flowing state. The body, mind, and spirit are no longer “locked.” Sometimes pain and symptoms are re-experienced during the healing crisis but it is temporary and on the way to being released or “healed”.

Reiki energy healing always works on the causal level to shift imbalance and dis-harmony and may bring to the surface past physical injuries, conditions and personal issues so that one can heal their unfinished business. And Yes, as my guru would say, “that is VERY GOOD.”

Our retreat in Carmel on 11.11.11 was so significant that it has taken awhile to absorb and report on the activities of light that we participated in with Maureen Moss of World Puja, and two gifted teachers Jacqueline Joy and Mary Valez. Moreover, it has been thrilling to hear from other visionary leaders what their experiences were and the similarities are astounding. So I will chronicle them a bit for you in the hope of communicating a fraction of the enormity of the blessings that have been occurring, albeit it in slightly varying descriptions.

Bliss Beach, Carmel, CA: Portal of Perfected Light anchored

I was guided to share two brand new initiations I have been given to help anchor in the new light energies. The first was a Gift from a group of enlightened Earthkeepers who refer to themselves as “The One” who manage the Elemental Kingdom at the Portal at the center of the earth and are now helping us integrate the solar light energies and the Shift of the Ages with more ease. I taught everyone how to access this radiant rock, which represents the Light at the Center of the Earth. I shared this initiation globally on World Puja Network also as I was instructed that it was needed worldwide. The second initiation was the golden Key to the Portal of Perfected Light—given to me at 3am this past summer. It felt monumental to receive such a gift, yet I felt I knew very little about what I was receiving or perhaps more importantly, what I was to do with it. At one point I did get a glimpse that I had once taught this in an ancient Temple and this was the first of three keys that initiates had to embody. I was instructed that it represented the awakening of the ability to access more fully the Divine Light of the Creator which had been greatly diminished through humanity’s misuse of free will and egoic pursuits.

I had never taught this Key attunement before. It was not even clear if I would be able to at this gathering as my guidance was “wait and see” if things were aligned and everyone was ready to receive it.

But I finally got the green light to attune everyone on Bliss Beach and so many shared their unique experiences it was enormously validating. Then at the end I noticed a column of pinkish light had opened on the beach, and it was clear to me that it was a portal…what was unique was there was a ring of light kind of like a halo at the top and at the bottom. The geometry of the circle maintained the structure and integrity of the Portal ensuring that it would remain open.

We came to Bliss Beach because of the very sacred feeling there and a portal had been lovingly tended for years by Jacqueline Joy, a Carmel resident. So now the portal felt like it had been permanently anchored and was unshakable. I was aware that this was just one activity among many around the globe, yet I felt that what our group accomplished was incredibly significant and allowed other groups to accomplish their mission, and vice versa.

I also noticed that the crystal grid around the earth no longer felt as far away, and it was not porous and web-like anymore but visibly more a blanket of light surrounding the Earth, hugging the Planet. Today I saw that it was joined by many Beings of light –they were en masse and very close. Like the Company of Heaven has been properly invited and is now your neighbor making a house call.

Arizona: The Christed Light Has Returned

I was still digesting the enormity of the events, and not really certain how to describe what had occurred. Then I was on a call for a Mastering Alchemy course with Jim Self, and he was filling us in on his understanding of the events of 11.11.11, as he led a group of 300 people in Arizona. He reported that Archangel Metatron confirmed that the Christed Light has returned to the planet after being absent for millions of years!

I was so excited to hear this and wished that I could speak to Jim about it in person to compare notes as some of the languaging was a bit different, but I felt we were describing the same monumental event. I hadn’t spoken to him personally in over two years, as he no longer works individually. Yet a miracle happened the very next day—Jim called me!

Excitedly I shared our experiences in Carmel with the Key to the Portal of Perfected Light, and how THRILLING to know that we are experiencing the same miraculous events in slightly different words. “Yes, he agreed, it is thrilling!”

Jim went on to describe that about 6 weeks prior to 11.11.11 there was a new possibility of accomplishing something that had not been available till now. “When our planet fell from grace, fell into density and the The Elohim, Lords of Light, and Archangels saw this happen, they petitioned the Creator and created a template and placed all the Christed Light (a consciousness, not a man) in this sealed template, called the Earth Star that sits below your feet. On 11.11.11 the Earth Star came back into the Earth itself.

Not only the template was held, but we drew that Light into the heart, right down thru the Earth Star into the core of the Earth! The 11.11 pattern of Light is extraordinary— calm, peaceful, gracious, ease and presence. It heralds a time where “the lion lays down with the lamb.” We are entering another realm. “

New Zealand: 1st Portal of Solar Light Opens on Earth

Patricia Cota-Robles, a visionary leader, who led a group to New Zealand wrote: “It is difficult to express in words the enormity of what occurred on 11:11:11, and the eleven days preceding and following that powerful day, but the Company of Heaven said that Lightworkers around the world succeeded in accomplishing our mission in ways that were beyond the greatest expectations of Heaven.

Eleven is the master number that reflects the transformation of the physical into the Divine. The most vital activity of Light involved another quantum shift that was destined to take place within Earth’s Crystal Grid System…

Pulsating within the Etheric Realms above New Zealand is a complex of Temples that serve as the Elemental Training Center for all of the Elemental Beings serving the Earth. These are the Beings who co-create and sustain the physical substance that comprises the physical, etheric, mental, and emotional bodies of Mother Earth and Humanity. The 5th-Dimensional Elementals will assist in co-creating the patterns of perfection for the New Earth.

Our Father-Mother God sounded a Cosmic Tone, and the Solar Logos from Suns beyond Suns breathed a shaft of Light from the Core of Creation into the Heart of Mother Earth. We are entering another realm

Jim Self once gave this example of how the higher dimensions will be: “You will be able to put out your finger, ask a dragonfly to alight, and have a conversation.”

Our animal communication retreat at Panther Ridge was the beginning of December, a few weeks after 11.11.11. In the final moments, we were awed by a master teacher in cougar clothing named CJ, who when I first met him he was very intimidating and untouchable. Now, he was rubbing up against the fencing, kissing my hand, getting butt rubs and loving on everyone.

CJ answered personal and planetary questions from the entire group, including his specific Purpose and 2012. CJ replied that he was “here now to bring in the new consciousness and anchor everyone more fully in their heart.” Several students commented after that exquisite and life-altering conversation with a mountain lion, that “we had entered another dimension, another realm.” I couldn’t agree more.

Indeed, the lion lays down with the lamb!

Years ago after I gave a presentation at a local yoga studio a young woman approached me and asked what I did. I replied, “I do Reiki.” “I do too” she said excitedly. We spoke a bit about our mutual love for the healing art, then she asked again, “What do you do?”

I thought she didn’t hear me, and I kindly responded again, “I do Reiki”. Puzzled, she then clarified, “Yes, but I meant what do you do for a living??” “REIKI” I answered emphatically. Perplexed, she commented that I was the first person she ever met who was able to make a “living” doing Reiki. This really saddened me, as I know it to be true that so many practitioners would love to be merging their passion with their purse and have a profitable healing practice, or at least one that would sustain them.
One of the main reasons that some are able to do the healing work they so love and make a living, while so many others feel it is a pipe dream has to do with the concept of Mastery and Apprenticeship. Ideally, we are all teachers and students simultaneously, yet recognizing, accepting and honoring those relationships are key.

Secret #1: Attitude of Apprenticeship
My Reiki Master gave me a great compliment though at the time I wasn’t sure it was positive. When I applied for Mastery, she said “I can teach you—you are like a child.” Being open and willing to learn, having “beginner’s mind” is what she meant.

In another tradition, there is the Guru-disciple relationship. The disciple finds a Guru or spiritual master and requests acceptance as a disciple. This is followed by years and even decades of spiritual discipline, practices, and seva or selfless service in the ashram or spiritual community. In return for all the effort, the grace of the Guru flows into the disciple giving great wisdom and enlightenment.

Kumara and I know this path very well, as we devoted a combination of 50 years to our spiritual path in this way, logging untold hours of meditation, pranayama (breathwork), yoga, chanting, mantra repetition and sacred rituals.

And did I mention Service??? My first “seva” was cleaning toilets and laying sod. Kitchen seva, garden seva, hosting guests and holding massive events, building temples and labyrinths, and running AIDS hospices. You get the picture. And yes, we “paid” for the privilege. And we have no regrets, for what we got in return for our ample investment, is a wealth of spiritual wisdom, fortitude and grace.

In Japan the Reiki students performed treatments in the clinic daily for years before “graduating” to another level. And not all of them did get to the higher levels of Mastery.

My partner Kumara shared that an apprentice woodworker in Germany would pay the Master Carpenter a good amount per month for 3 years to learn the trade. Then another 3 years he would get some pay as a “Geselle”, and continue to learn the business end of the trade. Finally, he would apply for the honor of being a “Master” and take the appropriate exams etc. Not everyone made this level of artistry and business acumen.

The western addiction to “fast food” has spawned what my Master would call “fakey reiki”. Some students think they should be able to receive attunements online, or a weekend Mastery course and then wonder why they can’t teach and have a practice that supports them.

It is not just the students’ shortcomings here, but the teachers who are only offering the McDonald’s style courses at bargain rates that prevent the full transmission of the energy and power that is available through Reiki when true apprenticeship is acknowledged and understood.

Secret #2: Find a Teacher
Whether you are trying to master a musical instrument or wanting to become adept at a healing art, finding a great teacher will certainly speed up your learning curve exponentially. I find many folks here that equate reading books with acquiring knowledge on a topic. And while I love to read, I can tell you that the most impactful “learning” that I ever accomplished was with my teachers.

Often it is not just the words either. It happens sometimes primarily by a sort of osmosis, or transmission. The very state of being gets more easily downloaded than if you took years of book knowledge of a subject, especially in the realm of energy healing, personal growth and spiritual and intuitive development.

I am certainly not advocating giving away power here. But the results of devoting time, energy and resources to a true teaching are phenomenal. Personally I popped open immediately upon meeting my first guru from India. Just being near her was ecstatic. It was as if you got to enter into her energy field and transformations happened effortlessly. Then I spent the next 20 years absorbing the practices so that I could manage to hold that higher vibration more on my own.

When it comes to Reiki, I would recommend finding a Master who is focused full time on their healing art. Hopefully fairly successful so they are not in struggle, as that takes a ton of focus away from healing. Find one that you resonate with and feel good around. This is not to say they never challenge you but you should feel uplifted in general. One who is devoted to their own self-care meaning they receive regular treatments and attend to their own spiritual growth via meditation or other similar practices. A good place to start is to check the Reiki Alliance, as it if the only organization I know of that regulates its Masters via a personal interview before acceptance into the Alliance to assess how they were taught.

Secret #3: Invest in yourself
When you invest in a course or workshop, it may feel as if you are investing in that person or teacher. But the truth is you are investing in yourself through them. This concept can change the way you view these opportunities and allow you to take full advantage of them instead of wondering if it is “worth it”. Even when the experience is not always perfect, when you take responsibility for it you can always find a valuable teaching in it.

My guess is the young woman I mentioned earlier who never could make a living doing Reiki, personally had made very little investment in her training. And this is not just the students responsibility. The teacher too must set the standards high.

When Ms. Takata brought Reiki to the US so many years ago, she saw that Westerners tended not to value things unless they paid for them. So she established standardized fees for each level of Reiki which have not changed for over 30 years in the Reiki Alliance yet many have declared the values out of proportion. Takata sold her home in Hawaii to apprentice with Dr. Hayashi in Japan and learn Reiki.

Now I understand why Takata placed a very decent value ($10,000 in 1980—counting inflation it is over $28,000) on Reiki Mastery. I cannot begin to add up my investment in Reiki, energy healing and spiritual practice, combined with all the business, coaching and counseling trainings. And I have not one regret, it was totally worth every unpaid minute, and every penny borrowed.

Secret #4: Don’t be afraid to ask others to invest in you
Receiving energy exchange for services is just as valuable as giving it. The circle of giving is only complete when there is receiving. I encourage all my students especially after Reiki Level II to begin charging for their treatments.

Once I was feeling very exhausted and I couldn’t seem to clear it for weeks. When I meditated on it, the answer I received was I did not charge enough and therefore I was out of balance and alignment and getting depleted.

The rest of the message was this: You have a great fire hose of energy and healing to share, but you are only asking clients to come to you with a little garden hose. They are not able to receive the fullness of what you have to offer, and you are not feeling balanced. Right then and there I raised my fees. It was one thing to deny myself, but the thought that I may be blocking my clients and students from receiving more was unbearable.

Secret #5: Decide and take action
This is from my fabulous new conscious business mentor Kendall Summerhawk who says “Indecision robs you of massive amounts of energy.” Taking action is where many people fall down, especially spiritual seekers. You must move in the direction of your dreams and goals, with great intention. Even small actions performed consistently can have massive results over time.

Many years ago I moved from my spiritual community to a new city and was needing to find work. I knew my heart was telling me to do Reiki, but I had no way to get started. Instead of falling back on my law degree, I grabbed the Yellow pages and decided if I was going to have a healing practice I needed a massage table.

My small action allowed Spirit to step in, and I opened the page to “M” and found an ad for “Marriage & Family Counseling” that caught my eye as they mentioned holistic services. I tried to contact them for weeks with no response. Finally I drove to the office with my new Reiki resume, and eventually landed my first position in a Psychiatric practice offering Reiki treatments.

I encourage you to go for your dreams; in this time of great shift in human awakening and planetary evolution there is great opportunity. Now more than ever your dreams are within reach.

I will be forever changed by a little rat terrier named Lola, who shared with me such a brief but potent teaching.  Anyone who has ever lost an animal dear to them, ever felt guilty about it, ever spent desperate days on end searching for a missing animal, ever rescued a terrified neglected animal, ever wondered who these animal angels were, ever needed hope in the darkest of nights, then this story is for you.

The moment I laid eyes on her I knew she would break my heart.  I also knew she was very special.  Her name was Lola, and her rescue mommy brought her to me during a brief Animal Communication session at a local pet store.  She was rescued from Katrina hurricanes, after several temporary stops.  She shared with me that she had been in a puppy mill, with up to 50 other dogs, with very little human contact.  Lola lost her first litter in the flooding, and became nearly feral, she explained. The other dogs in her new household gave her a very hard time too. She was quaking, hiding behind the bench, and wouldn’t make eye contact.

That is, until I began to speak to her person about how intelligent she was, and how she understands much more than you would think.  I suggested she speak firmly to the other dogs of Lola’s trauma, and tell them they need to be more patient with her as she is NOT crazy, she just had a hellish life so far.

At that, Lola whirled around and made eye contact with me, staring, as if to say, ‘O my gosh, she GETS it!  She knows I am not crazy or stupid, just scared.”  I had her attention.  I went on to explain how Lola’s terror of the woman’s husband was not personal; merely a compilation of all her fears to date piled into one, the “man of the house”.  Her fears were enormous, and she needed lots of time and patience to work through them bit by bit.

The next day I received this email after our brief encounter:  “We’ve had a major breakthrough after our session with you yesterday!  Our most recent rescue dog, Lola, a Katrina victim, is terrified, especially of men. This morning, while I was still in bed, Lola sat under my husband’s desk, put her head in his lap, and let him pet her!  She has lived with us for 5 months without ever letting him touch her.”

I knew I had to work with this one personally.  There was so much to do to alleviate her fears, as she had nearly given up on humans.  Lola came eagerly to my house several times with her person, and we did healing work together, and hung out.  Her new “mom” said Lola recognized my name when asked if she wanted to come to my house, and fearlessly approached my door and came in, which was completely unusual for her.

So, it seemed only natural for me to extend a week long visit when her mom had to travel north to care for a hospitalized friend.  The first day with me she was glued to a corner near the door, shaking.  By day two, she was beginning to relax and allowed me to walk her without a fuss.  That night we had a major breakthrough.  Lola came toward me, letting me pet her and snuggling next to me!  She even came into the bedroom with my partner and slept under the bed.  We were really encouraged.

Then disaster struck–the retractable leash slipped out of my hand, in a strange kind of conscious slow-motion, and smacked into her butt. Off she vaulted and within seconds she was out of view. I spent the next four hours inching my way painfully through the densest bramble thicket imaginable.

Lola knew how to survive, and was spotted crossing a 4-lane road and stealing food out of dumpsters.  But she wouldn’t let anyone get near her.  I struggled for days with tremendous guilt and sadness, having just lost my own dog a few  months earlier.  Each night after searching for Lola, I would send Reiki healing energy to her. Yet I could not communicate with her at all, which was very unusual.

By the 5th night, both my partner and I finally made a connection.  Lola’s presence filled the room, and the only way I can describe it was a very large and angelic being, with very soft, but wise essence.  She stayed long enough to ease our worry, and to comfort us that there is a Divine Plan operating, which  we could not control.

Early the next dawn, I received several calls of sightings, and dashed out the door without even brushing my teeth.  I spoke to several police who also had reports of sightings.  At one point I even caught a glimpse of her at an intersection.

Little did I know it was the closest I would come to her again.

Three days later I wrote this final report to the growing number of friends who were on the lookout: “I am afraid that the lost doggie saga did not end the way we wanted.  Lola was sighted several times but would never let anyone near her.  Late Sunday night she was hit by a car and died of complications.  Thank you all for holding her in your prayers, and for your effort in driving around.   It really helped knowing we had so many helping to look for her.

After hearing she didn’t make it, we meditated and I asked to connect with Lola’s spirit.  This time instead of feeling her Presence standing in the room, like we had the other night, I felt her wrapping around me in an embrace, very profound and poignant.  Lola, the little rat terrier, was, and is, an amazing being.  I hope this message helps you as it did me.”

Lola’s message from spirit:

“I am an angel of Light
You recognized my intelligence, my sensitivity, my purity
For that I am ever grateful
It has truly freed me from the bondage of the body.
C and B (rescue parents) were with me 100% when it counted
And never gave up on me
I don’t know how to thank you all for helping me to complete my mission–my journey”

(I asked what that was)

“To heal, despite trauma. To Love, despite pain. To forgive, despite blame.  To Heal… to Whole.  I became Whole when you loved me.  When you saw me.  Not broken and scared – but sensitive and wise.

You reminded me who I was.  What I could be.  Love and understanding freed me from the karma of the flesh – I could return to Spirit – mission accomplished. I want everyone to understand what you understood when I presented my true self in your living room.  That all is in Divine Order.  That beings are not limited to the form they choose.  That comings and goings are much easier, and much more complex, than you imagine.

It is all laid out ahead.  Events, timing, even difficulties.  We choose our difficulties with great care, for the gems they hold within.  In Spirit we celebrate the difficulties equally with the victories.  There is no difference – for they all bring us to the Knowing, to the Oneness.

My journey has touched many people, you don’t even know how many were looking and praying for me.  This is the REAL story.  Not a missing puppy, not a dog hit by a car, not a leash that slipped, not even a “Katrina” victim.  These are all incidentals to the divine mission I took on, and by the way, accomplished.  I had to bring people together, in small ways, and in big ways.

The police even took time to look for me – the POLICE! – for a missing doggie.  People you don’t even know about drove around, put up flyers, prayed, connected in their concern.  Others saw me as a survivor, not a victim, not starving, but running fast and strong.  You see, perceptions changed.  In small ways, and in big ways.

Kumari saw my true self, and as a result I was able to give her plenty – remove sadness and pain from her own recent “loss”; lessen her guilt and feelings of over-responsibility for things well beyond her – or any human’s – control.  For this she will be forever changed – forever grateful – and much more capable of doing the work she was sent to do, without the burden of misunderstanding life and death, and her role in preserving neither. But simply and heroically I might add, seeing things as they truly ARE, seeing TRUTH and sharing this so others may understand their true nature, their divinity, their special mission here on this planet.

And that is Enough.  Enough for any life.  I had enough – Life.  I had enough – Time.  Enough – Love.  In one drop of C’s tears, enough Caring.  And enough – Sadness. It is not time for sadness.  It is time for celebration.  I return Home – joyfully and with great pride.  Mission accomplished.  More than was speculated.  I am very pleased.

From my vantage point, this life was a great success.  I know this is hard for you to grasp, especially right now as you grieve the loss of the One you knew.  But I am not that one only—four legs, soft fur, sad eyes, etc.  And I am not even the story—Katrina victim, puppy mill, runaway.

I am the Light of God shimmering in Divine Dogness one moment,
and in a flash,
I am Sunlight,
I am golden rain pouring down to soothe the hot brow of Mother Earth,
I am a dancing star.
I am… You.”

It was true what she said about relieving my guilt; there was such Peace in her and such wisdom in her perspective, I felt washed clean of the guilt that my slip-up with the leash had caused her death.  Though I do become saddened, I have never felt the depths of guilt and despair the same since meeting Lola.

Three months after my beloved Teacher in doggie form, Suki, left her body, I found myself still feeling an enormous ache in my heart whenever I thought of her. I knew enough to realize that how we feel is a choice, usually based on a belief. As a healer and dedicated spiritual practitioner for over two decades, I wondered why it was still so painful for me.

So I sat and meditated on this…why was I choosing to hold onto this pain for so long? I knew with great certainty that nothing dies, and I was able to directly connect to her Spirit. So why was I in such heart-break?

Sometimes it is the right question that brings the huge “AHA! Moment.” Answer: I felt the sadness every time because I “believed” that it was a more tangible experience of my connection to her.

In other words, if I let go of the pain of loss, I worried that I may let go of my final connectedness. I was relating with my beloved pet through this heavy emotion, pain, because it felt real and tangible. If I let go of the pain, I worried that I was letting go of my last real feelings of Suki. Breakthrough!

Pain, loss, grief, missing, these are all very heavy, dense, lower vibrational emotions and energies. Translation– they are easier to “feel” and therefore we tag them as more “real”. The higher, faster frequencies of love, cherishing, gratitude, celebration, are much lighter, finer vibrations; therefore not as easy to grasp.

In short, we hold onto our connection to our loved ones in Spirit through the painful emotions, because they feel more real than the love. Wow! I was shocked that I was still doing this. But there it was. I was afraid to let go of the pain because I wasn’t sure I would “feel” Suki anymore. Therefore, the strength of my connection to her was being defined internally by the degree of pain I still felt when I thought of her!!!

In that moment I made a decision. I did not want to experience Suki through the veil of loss and grief. I longed to feel her as she was in her doggy body—joyful, vibrant, sage, and more than a little bossy. I didn’t want to diminish either of us by masking the incredible, but sometimes more ethereal, feelings of love and lightness and merging hearts with a heavier experience just because it was easier to hold.

It took more effort to clear the debris of loss of the physical presence, all the “what-ifs” and guilt that I didn’t do enough, in order to experience the expansion of her consciousness and the merge of the heart that was happening very subtly if I allowed it.

This may still sound very academic at this point—mind-numbingly so if you are in an active grief state. So how can we begin to shift our awareness from the enormous ache of loss to this subtler, finer experience of love and unity consciousness? Here are some keys that will begin to open the door to connecting to our loved ones without feeling pain.

Step 1. Being in the Present

Much of our struggles exist because our attention is going back to the past or into the future. Carolyn Myss, the well-known medical intuitive, states that this is the main reason why we can’t heal ourselves. Our “soul” or consciousness is not fully accessible as it is attached to past events or future worries and thus fragmented. Therefore a current intention is not very powerful as much of our energy and attention is not aligned in the present.

Exercise: Sit quietly, close your eyes and bring your focus to your body. Just notice what sensations you feel when you apply this simple technique to collect your energy into present time.

Say aloud: “I call all of my thoughts, emotions, and energies back into the Present Moment now.” Breathe deeply several times.

Step 2. Releasing the Sadness and Grief

Making a shift always starts with intention. When you shift how you think about something, your feelings will follow suit. This is an aspect of the Law of Attraction, or the universal principle that “like attracts like.” Much of our beliefs are operating on a subconscious level, and so we experience the fruits of that thinking without knowing we have somewhere accepted a certain belief or concept about the way things are.

Begin by setting the intention to release or let go of the pain and sadness as the way to stay connected to a loved one.

Try this: “I release any energies, thoughts, feelings and concepts that no longer serve my Highest Good”. Breathe deeply.

Of course the denser emotions may take time to release and clear. This is where energy healing techniques can really support you to more easily and quickly release.

Step 3. Intention to Connect through Mutual Love

Again, it is important to start with the intention to connect to your loved one from Love rather than fear and pain. It is a conscious choice. Like the belief I had uncovered that if I didn’t feel the sadness of losing my dog Suki I wouldn’t feel her at all anymore.

Old Belief: Sadness and aching heart are more tangible and real than love.
New Belief: I choose to connect to my beloved through LOVE. Period.

Summary—Choose Expansion

Many who are grieving have shut down the feeling center of the heart, as it is so tender and overwhelmed with painful emotions. It may be necessary to allow yourself to feel again if this is the case. You will eventually get to the other side of the torrent of emotions and be able to feel other lighter, finer vibrations of love and spiritual connection.

Emotion is energy in motion. You do not have to hold onto these heavier feelings; they will eventually flow through you. If needed, repeat Step 1 and 2 to come back into the Present and continue releasing.

While you may not notice any change immediately, these exercises will set the stage for rewiring you to the new experience of connecting through your mutual and everlasting love and desire for expansion. An animal or person in spirit form is an expansion of consciousness while pain is a form of contraction. Now that you are aware, choose expansion. You won’t regret it!

Several advanced Reiki students both here and internationally joined me to send Reiki energy to nearly 500 people and their animal companions. You were joined by recipients from South Africa, Mexico, Canada, Argentina, Europe and all across the United States.

It is always so powerful when so many align with the same healing intention. And always a bit unique. We started out by directing the healing to all the Reiki Masters, and many great beings of Light and archangels, which got the healing essence off to a roaring swooshing start. As we send to such powerful souls, it amplifies the energies exponentially for all of us.

This time I included healing for everyone’s home and environment to help anchor the healing energy for you in your surroundings. This was very intense for me as my whole body began to feel like a lightning rod went through my spine to the earth. It is important to remember that everything is energy and keeping our spaces clear energetically is extremely helpful.

One new client from Arizona reported: “It was extremely POWERFUL AND WONDERFUL!!! For the first 5-7 minutes, I ”tuned in” and could feel the energy start to come before we got outside. My new pup Gus and I went outside and sat under my meditating tree and laid on the ground. Since you had worked with Gus before, I told him that you would be sending us healing energy; he seemed to recognize you and appreciate the energy!

The healing energy seemed to build in intensity. I could ”see” you and feel waves of energy coming from your essence. It felt like wave after wave of golden, pulsating energy to me. I also sensed the connectedness of the group and that this light was somehow bathing the planet as well.

This is exactly what I, and my Reiki students, have felt — that not only are we sending individually to each of you, but there is a wave of Healing Light going out around the globe, and ultimately each of you is connecting to the larger group.

It reminds me of the story of the 100th Monkey. One monkey on a remote island was observed to be learning a new skill of washing her food, and soon the other monkeys adopted this behavior. But what was astounding was this: once the whole troupe adopted the new skill, other monkeys around the globe were all at once washing their food! This raised the thought that there may be a universal consciousness that all of life taps into once a critical mass is reached (the 100th monkey in this case).

So when I do these Group Healings an unexpected phenomenon seems to be occurring. When we gather with the intention of giving and receiving Healing Energy, we are not just doing so individually. We are creating a new healing harmonic, a grid of healing light through our collective intention to be uplifted. The giving and receiving of support completes the circle and uplifts us all. That is why I truly mean it when I say that it is a great honor to serve in this way. I am deeply grateful to all of you who allow me to share what I have been given in such a beautiful way.

As I communicate often with the spirit of those who have left their bodies, I long to share with those who are grieving and feel left behind the awesome feelings, sensations and awareness I experience from those who take flight from the body. It is not what many people may anticipate; guilt, regret, blame, what-ifs. It is quite the opposite generally, as I connect to the Soul level consciousness, which is filled with tremendous expansion, deep understanding, great awareness and light-heartedness, even bliss.

Actually this topic was specifically requested by my Mom, who transitioned a few short months ago. My mother’s Spirit was very communicative and present for me immediately after she left her body. This was quite unusual, as she had been very sick and on lots of medication at the time.

Lag Time for Clarity
Normally in this circumstance I need to wait for a week or more before there is clarity and the ability to communicate from the new bigger perspective. It is rare that a person or animal can pop out of one dimension (physical) and be instantly clear and present on the spiritual plane.

This happened once before with a man who was surfing, and died from a heart attack on the board as he paddled to shore. He was very spiritually focused for many years, and he was able to describe getting up from the surfboard, and walking through a kind of clear jelly-like membrane and voila! He was fully conscious on the other side. He too was quite ecstatic and able to clearly converse about it shortly after his physical death.

Generally it seems to take some time for souls to gather up the energies and regroup in a very different dimension. Only when a being (animal or human ) is quite advanced and aware spiritually do I feel that they are able to orient immediately and share their expanded awareness and spiritual experience. I usually ask clients to wait a few weeks to have a session for this reason.

Cosmic Cruise
Not my MOM—she was raring to go, chatting me up night and day about the Bliss of not being bound to an aging ailing body. She was ECSTATIC and wanted to tell me all about it. I felt like she was experiencing a Cosmic Cruise, able to travel anywhere in the universe instantly with just a thought. She was having a ball!

The first conversation I had with her the day after she passed I asked her to describe what she was experiencing. She related immediately; “you know how I so enjoyed the gorgeous tropical sunsets every evening here in FL?” Losing her eyesight made her extremely grateful for the beauty she was still able to observe each day. “Well, all I have to do now, is THINK of the sunset, and I AM THE SUNSET!!” she crooned excitedly, like a child at their first amusement park. I could feel tingles of joy.

Mom wasn’t close to finished bubbling. “And you, I just think of you, and I can MERGE right into you!” Indeed, I could feel her energy merging with mine as we spoke. By the way, this part is not common or necessary for communicating with Spirit, but does sometimes happen –only with my permission now.

She was delighted with her new abilities and perspectives that opened up to her. She was, as many of us who are left behind try to find solace in, Blissful and FREE.

Animals Spirits are Blissful too
I have experienced this overwhelming joy with so many souls, but one of the first ones really stands out. Pooh Bear, who I dubbed the Buddha Kitty, left his body at the vet’s office and within moments my client called me, quite distraught of course. She wanted to connect with her best friend.

At first I had trouble “finding” him. It took longer than usual and when I mentioned my difficulty connecting, I finally felt him, laughing at me. Pooh Bear said distinctly “ You can’t find me because you are not looking Big enough!” In fact, I had attempted to connect with his rather small kitty body as I had done many times before to send him healing energy. But this time I had to widen my scope, and eventually I cast my energy radar to the width of the whole room, and then I felt him. His energy was HUGE!

The next thing that happened has been life-altering for me. I couldn’t find words to describe the waves and waves of joy, freedom, and ecstacy flowing from him and through me. I knew my client was too sad at the moment to take all this in, yet I so wanted to share my experience.

With this intention, I quickly grabbed a quartz crystal nearby and asked Pooh’s spirit to fill this crystal with his awesome radiant essence, so she could perhaps feel some of what I was tapping into. Quarts crystals are extremely dense and are known for their ability to register and amplify frequencies. I shipped the energized crystal to her, with the instructions to open it when she was ready. I had no idea then what she might feel.

Several weeks later I heard from Pooh Bear’s mom that she opened the golden cloth pouch and removed the crystal, held it and burst out crying. She could instantly feel Pooh Bear’s unique Presence. Since this time I have offered to energize crystals with the essence of the departed souls, and share their unique messages, with the intention that others can access the enormous ecstatic energy and awareness that is available when Spirit takes flight from form.

TRANSITIONS: A Time of Increased Intuition and Spiritual Gift
PART III : How Life Force Leaves the Body

While I prefer to teach about how energy healing has been successful at restoring bodily functions (aka life), I thought it might be helpful to share my observations of what happens during transitions. As an intuitive energy healer I have a unique perspective to describe what I sense during these often confusing times. Hopefully it will guide and support those of you who go through this yourself, and wish to be more aware of the subtle clues.

When I offer Reiki to someone who is ill, at times I have noticed that the life force, or prana, or subtle energy that permeates the body, is not flowing in certain areas. After a session of applying Reiki, generally the flow returns. Except when it doesn’t. This is often a sign that transition is happening and the life force has begun to release from the body.

I first noticed this when I was giving Reiki to a dear grandmotherly friend of the family. She had fallen ill and my mom asked if I would help. When I applied Reiki, I noticed there was no energy flowing at all from her root chakra at the base of the spine down her legs. Instead I felt a huge channel of energy connecting to the center of her body and flowing upward.

I applied Reiki for more than an hour and her flow did not change. Instinctively, I knew her life force had withdrawn from her feet on up to her belly, and also noticed her kidneys had shut down.

Without revealing my concern about her dying, I made sure she saw her doctor and she was admitted to a hospital immediately. It took them weeks to diagnose that she had kidney failure. I visited her often and she requested Reiki each time, as it seemed to be her only comfort as her body shut down. Even my mom, who was not into Reiki at the time, could see the tightness in her face relax as she drifted off in relief.

It was such a clear demonstration of what happens to the prana in the body during transition that it helped me to identify this process in others. This same experience has borne out many times to give me a heads up that a person’s or animal’s spirit is preparing to leave what one spiritual master referred to as “central jail” (aka the body).

Feet First
My spiritual teacher taught that the life force will make its final exit out the head or crown chakra in a “good death”. I have observed this many times in the AIDS hospice and in my practice — prana always seems to loosen its grip starting from the feet and releasing upward till it exits out the head.

Another way I have experienced transition cues is the inability to ground someone’s energy into the Earth. I once was treating a man long-distance who had lapsed into a coma. I tried many times to connect his root chakra with his grounding cord to help him to pull up some Earth energy into the lower part of his body. No matter how many times I visualized his grounding cord, it would not seem to stay connected to the Earth. He transitioned that evening.

When mom was in the hospital we gave her Reiki several times. At first I noticed that her life force was not flowing much below her lower belly around the second chakra. The next day Western medicine was giving us very mixed reports, as some indicators were improving even while others looked worse. However, when I checked again her energy was removed up to the solar plexus or third chakra.

The following day she had difficulty breathing, and when my partner and I applied Reiki we both felt her energy had released all the way to her throat. She transitioned very shortly after this experience.

Even so, some of her organ systems seemed to be improving so the doctors continued to treat her, and of course we all were hoping for a turnaround. Many times there is a burst of energy right before transition and it fools us all. The prana collects for one final hurrah as it takes energy to exit the physical form, and it is often mistaken for a physical improvement.

Animals demonstrate similar transition processes
Animals also have life force flowing throughout their bodies and it also takes a similar path as they transition. Sometimes I have treated pets that are having difficulty in their hind end. Most often it is a structural issue, when joints and musculature is weakening. However, there are occasions when none of the joint supplements seem to be working. This can be because the life force is leaving the body starting with disconnecting from the hind end. It may take months for the prana to leave completely, or it can be much quicker.

Helps to Prepare Us
Often both animals and people sense this shift and begin preparing long before anyone else realizes. My mom had many prophetic comments that she was leaving soon now that we look back over the past several months and compare notes.

My mom maintained a great sense of humor, and expressed a boatload of gratitude as she anticipated her Finale in form. By the time my entire family had gathered at the hospital, she was quite exhausted and deteriorating rapidly. When the final family members arrived, my two young nephews from Atlanta, she perked up briefly for their visit.

Then she whispered hoarsely something unintelligible. I moved closer but still couldn’t decipher it. I placed my ear to her lips and finally understood what were to be Mom’s last words: “Say goodnight Gracie!”
