In grade school my teachers taught that animals had no soul and therefore were inferior beings. It didn’t make sense to me then, and certainly does not ring true now. In fact, my experience is quite the opposite.

I have found animals to be amazing teachers in general, for demonstrating qualities humans could certainly aspire to, such as: unconditional love, light-heartedness, patience, persistence, and forgiveness. These are qualities that most of my clients would say their pets possess in abundance. But it doesn’t end there.

Author Penelope Smith observes that “animals can teach us about our own true nature, since most of them always know and never disconnect from awareness of themselves as eternal spirit functioning within the whole web of life.” I would have to agree. I have witnessed animals who are clearly Spiritual Teachers, serving to show us more evolved ways of being better humans.

I spent over two decades studying with renowned Spiritual Masters. Then I began to notice how certain animals were assuming the same roles, teaching us how to meditate, how to be fully present no matter what is happening, how to release old energies and patterns instantly, and how to do advanced and profound healings.

Animals as Meditation Masters
A client called me years ago about her cat who was diagnosed with cancer with very little time left. I sent Reiki and he had instant relief from many of the discomforts of the cancer. There was a sense of completion with his human, as he saw her through a very challenging time. But now he was a bit despondent as he was waiting to die. He needed another purpose.

So we talked about what he could focus on now and the cat showed me that he was a powerful and skilled meditator. His person confessed to being a bit stuck in this area, as she would get to a certain place of emptiness, and would become afraid. I suggested that the cat could become her Meditation Teacher with whatever time he had remaining…he became elated and got to work immediately.

Her “Buddha Kitty” then proceeded to support her by first going to different states of consciousness, having me describe them and hold the space, and then his person would more easily access them. Her fear diminished with each session.

Animals as Master Healers
I once asked my puppy Suki who she was in that little doggy body and she communicated that she was a “healer” but she wanted to be somewhat incognito and work unconventionally. I attuned her to Reiki early on, and made the mistake of initiating her paws. Suki proceeded to use her paws and “punch” people at times in their solar plexus, and just as I was about to scold her, people reported that she shifted major blockages they had been unable to release!

When Suki was very near transitioning, I was very sad as she had a huge open tumor on her shoulder. I curled up with her on the couch in my office one night. Suki immediately filled the room with a blanket of enveloping energy that was so thick I felt like I was in the Divine Womb, and all my fear and sadness melted away. Suki explained telepathically that I should not just treat the body with healing energy, but fill the room with it too so that people and animals would feel safe and be able to more easily release their limitations.

“Be Here Now”
Much of human misery stems from the fact that we are most often living in the past or the future, rarely in the present moment. Animals are incredibly able to demonstrate this ability to be fully present.

People often call me to find out if their animals are in pain. Though animals feel all types of pain, they often are not experiencing it the way humans are because they are not obsessing mentally about it. They have the ability to be fully in each moment. So one moment they are perhaps aware of their body and its discomforts, and the next they are watching a bird, and so fully in that moment that there is little or no pain experience.

So if you have been secretly wondering if your Snoopy is a Sage or Shaman, if Buddy the Beagle is a Buddha, or Lucky the cat is a Lightworker, you may be on to something. Don’t let the fur or feathers fool you! There are some pretty awesome spiritual adepts masquerading in animal garb. And I would love to hear your Teacher Tails :)

Last week a gentleman called about my Animal Reiki and Communication workshops in New Paltz and we talked for awhile about his new-found passion for horseback riding. He stated that his true goal was to experience “union with a horse.” I knew immediately he was coming to the right place, yet I had no clue exactly how magnificently we would all experience his heart’s longing.

The “Holy Grail” of all spiritual seekers is the experience of Unity Consciousness, or Oneness– the Merge of flesh into Spirit, the pure knowing that we are not separate but One Mind, One Heart, One Consciousness expressing through all form. Other ways to attempt to express this delectable yet inexpressible space beyond words: Going Home to the Heart of All that Is; The Bliss of the Self; A Joining of Hearts; Melting and dissolving into No Mind; Unconditional or Divine Love; Ecstatic Union.

Well this is also the ultimate destination and delicious nectar of possibility of all that I teach. Not the least of which can happen in my work with animals, though it has never happened so undeniably with a group present as it did this Sunday in my Animal Communication workshop at LaLuna Farm.

And it was doubly sweet because it happened with a difficult horse named Categorica; she was a miserable being when we first met over a year ago, and challenged everyone with her mean temper, her fear and skittishness, and her flat out refusal to jump (especially disappointing for a jumper). In short, she was downright dangerous and her owner reasonably refused to have anything to do with her and couldn’t even give her away. (Read more about her in my last blog.)

I saw her twice in Wellington, and her owner continued to work with me, often over the phone, since our first session the spring of 2009. They both made generally steady progress with a few pitfalls and injuries along the way, so I couldn’t wait to see Categorica in person again.

I visited her stall last Friday evening with the same gentlemen, Joseph, and though she seemed fairly friendly with me, some of her old mistrust returned when faced with a new person approaching her. Joseph was understandably afraid of her as she flicked her ears and jerked her head around nervously and a bit threateningly, though nothing like the menacing mare I met our first day.

On Saturday we opted to work with several other horses to practice Reiki with as I felt Categorica would have trouble tolerating lots of new people touching her, and frankly did not think it was safe for the students. The other horses we chose all responded with great big sighs and gentle nickerings of “more, more, don’t stop the Reiki.”

But the big surprise came on Sunday when we all went to the barn to practice our telepathic communication skills. Categorica had just come in from a walk, and her owner Julie brought her towards our group on just a halter and lead rope. Julie stopped a bit of a distance away so Categorica would feel safe, and we all sent an energetic “hello” as we had been practicing that morning.

Miracle number one happened – Categorica moved forward toward us and extended her muzzle toward every single person until they offered their hand and she ever so gently sniffed and licked us all in a row in an unmistakable greeting. A noise in the barn caused her to turn her head before she officially greeted the remaining two students. Immediately after she checked out the noise, she went back to exactly the two people she had missed and again offered her muzzle and touched their hands in the sweetest most profound and intentional “hello” I had ever witnessed.

She was completely at ease, head lowered, soft and sweet with eyes fluttering dreamily and kindly, all her movements very slow and trusting. Her owner kept commenting that she had never done anything like this before.

Then came the second miracle. She fixed her gaze on me directly and moved forward again till she was just a few inches away from my face, staring straight into my eyes for what seemed like an eternity. Several minutes of total silence and complete stillness ensued, and I felt my heart center burst open and my whole body begin to resonate with what I can only describe as the “Great Big Heart Love of a Horse” filled with the deepest tones of gratitude and a depth of knowingness that I have only experienced with true spiritual masters.

About 10 minutes went by in this exquisite equine embrace, and I felt her have a momentary flicker of doubt. She conveyed to me that she was a bit concerned that the raw power of her BIG- HEART-HORSE-LOVE may be too much for some of the students. So I spoke out loud finally, and articulated what was happening to me as best I could; sharing her concern. I asked everyone to make a conscious choice to receive her potent prying heart-opening expression of her true being, so that she could continue knowing that everyone was willing to receive the enormity of her gift.

Luckily, everyone was enthralled and receptive to having their heart burst open in this very direct and powerful way, and so Categorica felt permission to continue and began again to stare right into my eyes allowing everyone else to bear witness.

I told her mentally that I could hold everything she was transmitting, and I would send it right back. It felt like my body was a mad rushing river in springtime, nothing to hold onto sweeping everything in its path downstream. Relinquishing all boundaries, I merged into a huge undulating current of the most forceful energy I ever felt, a love so fierce and powerful that it would not allow me to withhold anything. This love was not soft and fluttery but so bold and raw and enveloping that it’s dynamite blast pried my chest cavity open quite palpably.

I could hold onto nothing. I could only agree to be flooded, to let go of all smallness and holding back, to feel my own greatness as I felt hers, not separate and smaller but uniting and matching. This Big-Heart-Horse-Love demanded that just as I accept the bigness of who she is, I must immediately and fully accept that largesse within myself and reflect it right back in order to keep the flow going. Anything less would have diminished both of us.

This immense Presence and great expanded awareness is what I saw in her that first day, underneath the terrible display of resentment toward all of life. I remembered telling her owner that if she could get through the many layers of fear and mistrust and anger and disappointment this mare had built up about humans, that she would have the most amazing horse and the greatest teacher she would ever know. And now I stood before her, in all of that great potential unmasked, and I whispered silently in my heart: “Categorica, I see you for the great spiritual being that you are,” residing at times in a very ill-fitting and uncomfortable horsey form. And she continued to pry me open with her massive spiritual presence, first my heart chakra flung far and wide, then on to my solar plexus, the third chakra of power, and then to the lower first and second chakras that began to buzz and tingle and expand, until I felt like I had been dissected and peeled open wide to my core, a complete unveiling for both of us.

My sister Meg, standing to my right, said the only other time she felt anything like this was sitting in front of Ma, one of my Meditation Masters. And this is exactly why I am working so much with animals, for I have found them to be incredible spiritual teachers in general, and a handful of them are highly evolved Teachers on par with some world renowned Masters that I have had the great good fortune to live and study with. Yet rarely have they revealed themselves with so many others around me, and never before in a workshop setting. This is a testament to the participants’ ability to become still, quiet the noise of the mind, and open their hearts. For often, the willingness to receive such a blessing of pure bliss is key.

So before I left this exquisite moment with this newly awakened Teacher in horse clothing, I wanted to let Categorica know that I would honor her by telling people about her true essence, and without skipping a beat, she replied: “And I will be telling others about YOU!” Straight from the horses mouth!

Last issue I decided to “come out” and begin to share more about the “miracles” that have been happening for many years, and I began with my personal healings and magical happenings.

Now I would like to share some magical moments with my clients, and this one happened to be a gorgeous chestnut 14 yo thoroughbred gelding Grand Prix jumper. And these results happened in only one session! Often the presenting problem is not the only thing that clears– an underlying issue can come to the surface and be healed as well!

International Grand Prix Jumper’s Colic Healed

I performed long distance Reiki and animal communication phone sessions for 4 years to treat various lameness issues and minor health issues, often related to travel to Florida. On this occasion I was in Wellington so I visited the jumper with my sister who was his vet for many years. This was my first time meeting him in the flesh. The gelding had just arrived from NJ and no one was around. He seemed increasingly uncomfortable, and at first we just thought he had a rough time traveling, and adjusting to the new routine and environment.
He never was fond of the FL scene as I recalled from our sessions. Not enough turnout, hanging out in grassy pastures with trees. But he was beginning to show more than signs of stress; now he was having diarrhea, and looking at his sides, and my sister and I both thought he appeared colicky. She called the groom again, and I continued to send Reiki. She got her stethoscope and listened for bowel sounds (or lack thereof) and it was consistent with a colic diagnosis. In horses, colic can be fatal.

Now both of us were treating with Reiki–my sister has Reiki Level II–and awaiting his groom. The most obvious area to treat was the gastrointestinal tract, and the distress symptoms continued but were lessening after 15 minutes. Scanning with Reiki over other areas of the body, I noticed the jumper had an area in his neck that was energetically blocked. My sister confirmed this and told me he had stiffness in that area for over 8 years, and the vet who treated him previously was also aware of it and none of the veterinarians had been able to successfully cure it.

“Please Don’t Twitch My Ears!”

The neck blockage felt like the source of the problem to me, much deeper than the colic. By this point he had his head down by my knees and I began to feel him becoming quite emotional. I felt lots of sadness coming up, and I asked him why. I received an image of his ear being twisted, and heard the horse pleading “please tell them I will do what they want if they just ASK– they don’t need to twist my ears, PLEASE! I can understand very well if they just explain what they want.” It is a common practice to steady a horse when doing difficult or painful things like giving shots, dental work or other potentially dangerous operations with a horse to use a twitch around the very sensitive ears and hold them steady.

The groom arrived by now, and I spoke these insights out loud to her. She agreed to tell him what she needed of him and not twist his ears. It seemed that the twitching had happened before she was his groom; she was very kind and understanding. The jumper let out a lot of emotions, making me cry actually as I felt it, and the tightness in his neck was significantly improved, however still not totally released.

My sister was giving Reiki to both sides of his neck at once, hoping the horse would move freely and self-adjust through moving his neck sideways but he wasn’t quite ready or able to let it all go. By now he had passed some manure and the colic symptoms were rapidly clearing. I suggested the groom take him for a walk to let him move it out a bit as he had released a lot of emotion and old pain.

Underlying Neck Stiffness Healed

He walked out of the stall fairly gingerly and short-strided, but when the groom came back down the lane toward us he was walking very boldly. My sister exclaimed “I have NEVER in all my 8 years of knowing him seen him walk that freely and extended.” The Reiki not only helped shift the colic very quickly, but removed some old neck issues that had plagued him and stumped the vets for years. My sister spoke to the trainer the following day, who also noticed the change in stride immediately and acknowledged the jumper was moving sounder and more evenly than he had in many years!

Reiki enabled the layers of physical, mental and emotional blockages come to the surface and release. As animal communication helped to express and acknowledge the emotional feelings around the frustration and pain of having his ear twisted, he was able to release the physical stiffness in his neck. It seemed to me that trust was just as important an issue as the pain of the actual ear twisting. The gelding prided himself on being extremely smart and cooperative in nature and felt he didn’t need to be treated in such a callous and uncaring way, without giving him the benefit of the doubt and explaining what was required of him first. Once all of this old trauma and emotions were conveyed, and the groom agreed to talk to him first to get cooperation, he was able to release many layers of emotional and physical blockages.

Note: If I had it with me, I would also have applied Di-Gize, a blend of medicinal grade essential oils that has been very beneficial in treating colic naturally in horses and humans! When I am visiting a barn, now I don’t leave home without it!

How to Transform Insecure Aggression to Confident Champion in 2 weeks

Perhaps the simplest and most effective tool I know after 20 years of energy work with people and animals is Grounding, and everyone can do it. Just as electrical appliances need a grounding wire to stabilize, our bodies’ electromagnetic systems could greatly benefit from energetic grounding. I have helped aggressive dogs become sweet and calm immediately, horses stop rearing, and all kinds of behavior and health shifts for people and their animals

Preparation
This exercise can be done either sitting comfortably erect with your feet on the ground, standing or lying down, so long as your legs and arms are not crossed. It is helpful to close your eyes so you can be more inwardly focused. At first give yourself up to 10 or 20 minutes or more to fully experience it. After some practice, it will only take a few moments, depending on how much you need to release.

Step 1: Grounding
Breathe deeply several times. Visualize a tube or cord at the base of your spine going into the center of the earth. Make it large enough to let things flow easily. (Some people like to make it like a bank teller tube ? or large pipeline). No matter where you are you can begin to feel your connection to the earth, to the ground as you focus your awareness on the base of the spine and your grounding cord or tube connecting you to the center of the Earth. Notice how your body feels–you may feel more centered, stable, solid, relaxed yet focused

Step 2: Releasing
Make the intention that anything you no longer need, any energies that are not for your highest good, be released down this cord or tube into the Earth to be recycled. Release any tension, any tightness, any worries or thoughts–let them all go down this tube. Make it large enough to let things flow easily. Notice how this feels. Most people report feeling lighter, less pain and tension in the body, or a quieter, more peaceful mind.

Step 3: Grounding Your Animals
Always ground yourself first, like in an airplane you must take the oxygen first then assist others. Breathe deeply several times. Animals will respond to your energy shift and naturally feel more relaxed.

You can then picture a grounding line from the base of their spine or their belly to the center of the earth also. Remind them that they too can let go of anything they don’t need and recycle the energies into the earth.

NOTE: You do not need to know “how” to do this. That is now the job of the grounding cord, and universal intelligence responds to your intention. So will your animals reward you with calmer, more serene behavior!

Not to worry–this is not going to be a religious lecture or another “how to de-stress your holiday tips and techniques”. Just a call for contemplation to deepen our experience this season to recapture “holy-days.”

What helps you experience awe, wonder, profound reverence?

It may be church for some, or even family and friends gathering, or gifting and serving those less fortunate. For me, it is often being in nature and the magical gift of chance encounters with wildlife on their own turf.

We went kayaking again with friends who frequent Wekiva Springs north of Orlando. They kayak here several times per week and they said they never experienced so many alligators out. Kumara and I were repeatedly able to get within a few feet of gators, turtles, herons, and hawks, and otters and raccoons, even with a bulky, banging, kayak and camera. This is happening increasingly often.

We observed that when other kayakers approached the animals often they would become nervous and scurry underwater, even though the people were not outwardly noisy or even close at all.

So what was the difference?

It was the internal noise that the animals must have sensed—stressful, tense, afraid, chaotic = not safe.

Kumara and I emanate the deepest respect, and reverence for all life, and are in deepest gratitude for these special encounters. Openness, awareness of our state, and willingness to exchange what fear may arise with a deep desire for letting fear go and instead consciously choosing respect, love and tremendous curiosity and awe.

For humans, cultivating this deep quiet and harmony takes practice. It happens on the inside first, in the mind and heart. Clearing the past through forgiveness and letting go, grounding, breathing deeply, yoga, meditating, even serving others all are ways to become more harmonious.

Initially I was very fearful of alligators especially while sitting inches off the water in tipsy vessels. For me one of the greatest tools has been Reiki energy healing. The consistent practice of receiving and giving this powerful form of life force energy has helped me to release deeply held fears and emotional hurts on every level. And it has given me the awareness of my subtle energy flow, or blocks, in the present moment, allowing me to consciously release and choose differently if I am not satisfied with my emotions or reactions, or the reactions of others. Animals are great mirrors of our inner state.

Peace and harmony between predator and prey

This weekend we came upon alligators hanging harmoniously on a log within a few feet of a heron and a gang of turtles. One turtle even rested on the gator’s tail!!) When the predator is hanging out, not hungry, the usual prey can even find harmony on a log not a foot away! How is this possible?

Harmony: (def.) agreement, accord, congruity of parts to their whole 

In Africa at the watering hole, animal behaviorists note that when the lion is hungry all the other animals would scatter, but when the lion is merely thirsty, the prey animals did not even leave the water. They are reading or “sensing” the totality of the energy frequency—thoughts, stored emotions, tightness in the body all have a specific vibration—and deciding if it feels safe or not.

Animals in the wild generally are not holding onto old resentments and fears. They are in the present moment, congruous parts of the whole web of life, resonating and just “being peace”.

When I do group and advanced healing work I always emphasize the importance of working with the mind in the form of language and intentions to make a shift. Last night I came across definitive research that our very DNA can be influenced and reprogrammed by words and frequencies. The genetic code follows the same structure as human language. The article states that this research directly or indirectly explains phenomena such as clairvoyance, intuition, spontaneous and remote healing, affirmations and much more.

“Esoteric and spiritual teachers have known for ages that our body is programmable by language, words and thought. This has now been scientifically proven and explained. Of course the frequency has to be correct. For years I read every prosperity and affirmation book available. I would try things for awhile but sometimes felt awkward and felt that they didn’t seem to work. Over the years I have learned some refinements that have made all the difference. Today my clients and I have great success using intentions.

So I thought I would share the following tips to make intentions more effective:

State things in the positive. Many years ago most of my resolutions were centered around what I wasn’t going to do any more or didn’t want in my life….in other words– negative. We all know how well that works.

Even with animals it is much more helpful when we focus on what it is we do want. I often use the example of telling a dog to stop chasing cars. What is the dominant theme and image here? Chasing cars. The “stop” gets lost. So we are often sending the opposite message and wonder why things aren’t working.

If you state that you want the dog to sit calmly on the curb, then you are sending the action you do want and are much more likely to get results.

Add pictures. This is where the fun begins. Many people do vision boards where they cut out pictures of the things they want in their life, and refer to it daily to help bring things into the physical reality. When you add a picture of what it is you desire to create, it really pumps up the manifesting process. Animals often are helped when we add pictures to what we are trying to communicate. And it happens naturally as our language has agreed meaning, so I generally don’t need to think pictures when I speak to any animal. However if I am dealing with an abstract topic, like the time I am returning, I will consciously add pictures to it (eg three sunsets or three dinners to signify three days).

The same is true when we are trying to manifest a situation we have never experienced before…like being a millionaire. This is where adding detailed pictures of what it would mean to us to be wealthy: where would we live, what type of housing, our daily routine, etc. will really enhance your manifesting. We all have different ideas of what would make us happy so it helps to be as clear as possible.

Add feeling. Thoughts are electric and emotions are magnetic. Just using the thought process is only half the manifesting process. You must keep the thought long enough for you to step into the idea or concept fully, with all your senses. The feeling of freedom and joy that will come from having that new house or more money is what really becomes the magnet for the new experience. Call in the frequency or vibration or resonance of the intention—if you intend to be happy, take a few moments to totally feel it in your body. If you can’t get there directly, use a memory of being happy until you can remember the feeling. Eventually you will carve out a new neuro-pathway in your brain that allows you to connect with the “happy” feeling more easily.

“I intend that I am or I have…” I don’t know about you, but I was uncomfortable repeating phrases like “I am a millionaire’ when I had only 47 dollars in my account. Somewhere the gross unreality of it was dissonant and made me feel like a liar.

The phrase “I am” or “I have” when I am trying on a new concept or lifestyle was not working, because it was not resonating with the practical part of me who was saying “no you are not a millionaire, etc.”

“I intend that I am or I have…” is much more aligned with my integrity… no matter what my experience has been, “I intend that ______” from this moment forward, anything is possible here. It has completely shifted affirmations for me and now I find I use them easily and frequently. (Visit www.intenders.org for great language.)

Raise your frequency. Why do some have better luck than others with intentions? And why do some communications go smoother than others? Now I have a very easy time making intentions and communicating with most animals. I can speak the same exact words that a client has said to their animals with very different results. This is in part due to my vibration…I have spent 20 years mastering meditation, reiki energy healing, and other disciplines that raise my frequency or vibration and make shifts much easier.

If you are not getting results from the intentions, you may have to shift your frequency to match the requests. If you say “I intend to be happy” but are carrying around lifetimes of despair (a lower frequency), you may need to add practices that will help shift the old emotion. I love energy work for this reason as it is effective in areas where the mind may have some difficulty getting to. This is why traditional talk therapy has some limits as understanding something on a mental level does not always shift the old frequencies in the physical and emotional levels.

Keep it simple. Like anything else, if we try to take on too much we get overwhelmed. While I plan to set annual goals for the seven main areas of life (spiritual, career, finances, body, family/relationships, mind/education and social/fun), having too long a list of affirmations can be difficult to work with. So what works best is what you will use.

My favorite shortcut: “I intend that I am happy, healthy, wealthy and wise.” I sing this in the shower in the morning and it covers the bases.

So for 2010, I intend that you too are happy, healthy, wealthy and wise!
